Scenery

The 1600 sq ft Scene Shop is located in a separate building next door to the indoor theatre (about 12’-0” away).  Two overhead doors connect the shop to the theatre so loading in and out is quite simple.  The outdoor stage is located down an alleyway and across the parking lot from the shop.  The shop is shared with scenery, props, and paint.  In one corner of the shop is located the tool room which also doubles as the Technical Director’s office.  Located through a door in the building is a storage/welding area.  Along 3 walls are lofts for prop storage and one corner is a prop craft area and another corner is the paint area.  The shop has all of the major stationary power tools and 2 flux core welders.  About 75% of the scenery is wood construction with fabric and steel making up the other 25%.  The shop is responsible for scenic construction for all of the various shows each summer.

Props

The Prop Department works out of the scene shop, which is shared with carpentry and paint.  The Scene Shop is located in a separate building next door to the indoor theatre (about 12’-0” away). The outdoor stage is located down an alleyway and across the parking lot from the shop.   One corner of the shop is setup as a prop craft area and there are lofts on 3 walls for prop storage.  There is also a prop storage room in the theatre building itself as well as a storage container just outside of the shop. The shop has all of the major stationary power tools and 2 flux core welders.  Each summer there is usually a good variety of building/creating props vs buying/altering props. The prop department is responsible for propping all of the shows each summer.

Paint

The Paint Department works out of the scene shop, which is shared with scenery and props. The Scene Shop is located in a separate building next door to the indoor theatre (about 12’-0” away).   The outdoor stage is located down an alleyway and across the parking lot from the shop.  One corner of the shop is setup as an office space for the Scenic Charge Artist.  While the summer does not commonly involve drop painting, it does come up occasionally.  Based on the indoor Hangar’s stage configuration, the floor plays a large role in the design and will always be a painted focal point.  The paint department is responsible for painting all of the shows each summer.

Costumes/Wardrobe

The Costume Shop is located in a separate building right next door to the indoor theatre (about 12’-0” away).  The outdoor stage is located down an alleyway and across the parking lot from the shop.  The shop is 2 floors, the first floor is the work floor (machines, cutting tables, ironing tables, and a fitting area) and the second floor is stock.  Wardrobe facilities (3 washers, 3 dryers, double bay sink) are located in the theatre building itself.  There are 3 dressing rooms (2 large ones that can seat up to 12 actors comfortably and 1 that can seat up to 3 actors comfortably).  On average, the costume shop will build approximately 20% of the summer’s costume and the rest are pulled/bought altered.  The costume shop is responsible for the costuming and maintenance of all of the shows each summer.

Electrics

The Electrics Shop is located under the house left seating section of the theatre.  Storage for all of the lighting needs (save the units themselves) is here, as well as the electrics repair facilities.  Most units are stored in the catwalks when not in use.  Most lighting positions for the indoor stage  are over the audience are catwalk accessible and the rest of the positions are accessible via ladder and lift.  The indoor theatre is not a dimmer per circuit system and all circuits are hard patched to the dimmer racks.  The Hangar’s lighting units consist of a variety of units: Source 4’s, Chauvet Rogues,  Apollo ColorPro scrollers, I-Cues and DMX Irises.  The system is controlled by an ETC Ion.  The outdoor stage will have a full plot of LED units.  The electrics department is responsible for any and all lighting for the shows.

Sound

The Sound Shop is located under the house right seating section of the theatre.  Storage for all sound needs is here, as well as the sound repair facilities.  There is a basic speaker plot hung to cover the audience and then supplemented as needed.  Sound is responsible for all reinforcement, backstage audio monitoring, crew communications, cue playback, and any video needs (such as conductor cam for musicals).  The indoor shows are mixed on a Yamaha M7CL with an iMac for Qlab playback and the outdoor shows are mixed on a Midas M32.  The sound department is responsible for any and all sound needs for the shows.

Stage Management

The Stage Management Department works out of a temporary office trailer located at the theatre.  Rehearsals are held at the South Hill Business Campus.  The shows will move to the theatre for tech.  With 3 different series of shows (Mainstage, KIDDSTUFF, Wedge) there are a lot of Stage Managers.  Each Mainstage show will have an Equity Production Stage Manager and 2 other members of the SM Department as well.  On Mainstage  musicals one of the additional members of the SM team will be an Equity Assistant Stage Manager.  All other SM positions are filled by the Stage Management Fellows which include Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, or Production Assistant on  KIDDSTUFF or Wedge series productions.
