Next Generation School of Theatre: Summer Sessions

 

What is Next Gen?

A wide range of fun-filled summer classes that provide students entering grades 1-12 an unforgettable learning experience in the arts.  Topics range from musical theatre, creative play, acting, improv, filmmaking, and more.  We also offer a fully immersive performance opportunity with our three-week Next Gen Musical!  No experience necessary–just a creative spirit and curiosity.

 

What is the age range?

Classes are available for young people entering grades 1 through 12.  We are also looking for Teaching Artists in Training ages 13 and up.

 

What are the available dates?

Sessions start on Monday June 30 and run until Friday, August 29.  Most sessions are one week in length, running Monday-Friday 9am-3pm.

 

Where do summer sessions take place?

All programs will be located at the Hangar Theatre at 801 Taughannock Blvd., Ithaca, NY.

 

How do I register?

Registration launches Monday, February 3 at 10 am.

 

Next Generation Cancellation Policy

Full refunds are available up to two weeks prior to the start of the camp session. After that, we review refund requests on a case-by-case basis.

June 30-July 4

Dramatic Kids: Superheroes and Creative Masterminds

Grade 1-3

Using improvisation, theatre games, and crafts—students will create vivid and amazing characters from the greatest stretches of their imaginations. What does it mean to be a superhero? Why does a villain turn out that way? Students will demonstrate their new skill sets in a showcase of scenes and skits at the close of the session.

Break-a-Leg I

Grade 4-6

In this popular Hangar offering, students explore the world of theatre and storytelling through games, improvisation, movement work, script-writing and art projects in a program that emphasizes teamwork, imagination, and creative exploration and concludes with the group sharing a totally original play!


July 7-July 11

Dramatic Kids: Magical Musicals

Grade 1-3

A first exploration of musical theatre, which is sure to include some of the most magical moments and songs from your favorite Disney musicals. Using games, activities, and music, young artists will have the chance to recreate their favorite theatrical moments in story and song.

Introduction to Musical Theatre

Grade 4-6

In a fun and supportive group setting, students will experience the joy of expressing themselves through song, dance, and movement. Young people will develop dance and musical skills in an encouraging, playful, and joyous environment, and will work together to create a piece to share with friends and family at the end of the week.

Musical Theatre Experience

Grade 7-10

Working with skilled musical theatre artists, students will explore storytelling through song, musical scene study, and character work through a variety of styles. Students will work with instructors to create a musical theatre revue to share with friends and family at the end of the week.


July 14-July 18

Dramatic Kids: Creature Creations

Grade 1-3 

For young people who love animals–real and imaginary–and bringing them to life through creative play! Students will engage in games, explorations of movement and sound, and creature-centered storytelling to share in a showcase at the close of the session.

Totally Improv

Grade 4-6

Explore improvisation (the art of performing without a script) and ensemble building in a week-long class that develops essential theatre skills such as active listening, confidence, timing, and teamwork. Students will share techniques they’ve learned at the end of the week in a culminating performance.

NextGen Musical: Title TBD

Grade 5-12

This year’s fully produced KIDDSTUFF production, complete with costumes and scenery, provides students the chance to learn and create together, with the guidance of a professional director and choreographer. Hone your acting, singing, and dancing skills—culminating with performances at the Hangar Theatre. Performances will take place Fri, Aug 1-Sun, Aug 3. Please register only if you are available for all performances!


July 21-July 25

Dramatic Kids: Fantastical Fun

Grade 1-3

In a mix of theatre and creative play, students will have a chance to create a world filled with wonder and fantasy. Combining games, storytelling, characters and crafts—this class is perfect for your most creative young people! Students will share what they’ve created at the end of the week.

Introduction to Filmmaking

Grade 4-6

Aspiring filmmakers will be introduced to the building blocks of filmmaking via Smartphone technology (other devices can also be used) while working together to write scripts, create scenes, and learn about storytelling through visuals, framing, and dialogue. Students will create short films together in class that can be shared with friends and family at the end of the week.

July 28-Aug 1

Dramatic Kids: Space Explorers

Grade 1-3

Whether your young person imagines themselves an astronaut or aspires to become a true Jedi, this class will give them the chance to live out their space-age dreams. Working together to create stories and scenarios in a futuristic, out-of-this-world setting, students will have fun and activate their imaginations as they explore theatre games, improv, and inter-galactic characters.

Musical Break-a-Leg

Grade 4-6

A new version of our popular “Break-a-Leg” offering! Students explore the world of theatre and storytelling through games, improvisation exercises, movement work, and craft projects in a program that emphasizes teamwork, imagination, creative exploration, and confidence building, and ends with the sharing of a totally original play–this time, with group songs!

Improv and Sketch Comedy

Grade 7-10

Young performers can develop characters, scenarios, and acting skills through a variety of fun games and improv exercises while strengthening essential theatre skills such as active listening, clarity of choices, confidence, timing, and teamwork. Students will share techniques they’ve learned at the end of the week in a culminating performance.


August 11-August 15

Dramatic Kids: Fractured Fairy Tales

Grade 1-3

A chance to share the stories we think we know, in a whole new way! Young people will explore familiar tales through games and exercises, and turn them on their head by changing characters, setting, point of view or plot to make for a fun and exciting new telling. Students will share what they’ve created with friends and family at the end of the week.

Acting Up: Theatre for Social Change

Grade 7-10

A space for teen artists to explore and express questions surrounding identity, community, and social change through original theatre and storytelling. Students will create scenes and monologues to share that speak to relevant issues in their lives today, while building community, fun, and an ensemble together.


August 18-August 22

Dramatic Kids: Passport Around the World

Grade 1-3

Young artists can travel the world and the seven seas in this session: which will explore different places (real and imagined) with exciting characters (explorers! pirates! mermaids!) in stories, theatre games, and the creation of an original play to share with family and friends. 

Break-a-Leg II

Grade 4-6

In this popular Hangar offering, students explore the world of theatre and storytelling through games, improvisation, movement work, script-writing and craft projects in a program that emphasizes teamwork, imagination, and creative exploration and concludes with the group sharing a totally original play!

Future Filmmakers Lab

Grade 7-10

Students will work in teams to create a short film using Smartphone technology (other devices can be used as well) honing their skills for scriptwriting, framing shots, making sound and lighting choices, and basic editing. From start to finish–teens will have the opportunity to tell a story that matters to them on film–and share it with friends and family at the end of the session.


August 25-August 29

Play Builders 

Grade 2-5

A chance to explore, make connections, and enjoy the last days of summer–while making a play! Learn about all the elements that come together to create a performance in a fun and supportive environment that prioritizes creativity and expression.

FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIPS 

Need based financial aid available for all Hangar Education programs.  Please fill out the Scholarship Request Form below.  A Hangar representative will follow up within two weeks of submitting the form, to complete the process.  Please fill out all sections of the form, including the specific program you are interested in.  We hold spots for students requesting financial aid in all classes.
