An Odyssey
August 26-September 4
A community-created theatrical spectacular!
Co-production with The Cherry Arts. Directed by Samuel Buggeln.

An epic new piece of theatre created by our town, for our town. An Odyssey will celebrate the skills and talents of Ithaca’s diverse communities, working alongside professional theatre artists, to create a fresh and unexpected adaptation of Homer’s unforgettable tale. With music, magic, and adventure for all ages, it will reflect the myriad journeys we have all been taking, and must continue to take, during this extraordinary time in our lives.

An Odyssey community participation call— you can perform on the Hangar stage this summer!

Introducing the Hangar Theatre and Cherry Arts’ Community Works Project An Odyssey! The project brings together a diverse group of community members, with different kinds and amounts of performance experience, to create a brand new piece of theater alongside professional artists. Community participants will collaborate with Hangar actors, director, and design team to tell the story of Homer’s Odyssey interpreted for our times. Each community member cast in the production will be responsible for attending a multi-week, flexible, part-time rehearsal process beginning shortly, and participating in all performances. Community participants will receive a $100 honorarium.
We welcome individuals from across Ithaca’s communities to take part in this adventure! A preliminary workshop for potential participants will be held this Sunday July 11 2:30-4:30 at the Cherry Artspace, 102 Cherry Street. If you are interested in being considered for the project, please email Include a recent selfie (it doesn’t have to be great!), a brief description of any kind of performing experience you may have, and a sentence or two about why the project interests you. Please also note whether you would be available to attend this Sunday’s workshop (helpful but not a deal-breaker). There is no need to prepare any material for the workshop.
The performance schedule is:
Thurs Aug 26 7:30 (preview)
Fri Aug 27 7:30 (open)
Sat Aug 28 2:30 & 7:30
Sun Aug 29 2:30
Tues Aug 31 – Fri Sep 3  7:30
Sat Sep 4 2:30 & 7:30
An Odyssey contains scenes of loss and bereavement, and instances of insensitive language. We encourage people who are vulnerable to triggers to be in touch to ensure that they will be OK working on this material.

Previews are shows performed in front of an audience prior to their official opening. The purpose of preview performances is to give the director and creative team a chance to experience the production with an audience present, while adjustments can still be made. This summer, the Hangar will offer one preview for each production.
