Featuring Julie Benko from Once
Julie Benko (she/her) is thrilled to return to “gorges” Ithaca after starring in the Hangar’s production of Once this summer. Her acting highlights include Broadway revivals and national tours of Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, and Spring Awakening, as well as leading roles in off-Broadway and regional productions of Once, Rags, The Fantasticks, Our Town, The Golem of the Havana, Bar Mitzvah Boy, and more. Her debut album “Introducing Julie Benko” is available wherever music is streaming, and she is currently recording her second record due to be released next spring: a duo jazz album with pianist (and her new spouse) Jason Yeager. Julie is the author of The District, a full-length play-with-music set in the legal red light district that existed in New Orleans prior to World War One, which is currently being workshopped at the Astoria Performing Arts Center in Queens, NY. She was awarded the Gold Medal and Johnny Mercer Award at the 2017 American Traditions Vocal Competition, as well as the Wilde Award for “Best Actress in a Musical” for her performance as Girl in Once. She holds a BFA in Drama and an MFA in Acting from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. For more information, visit her website at www.JulieBenko.com.
With accompanist Jeff Theiss
Jeff Theiss (he/him) Music Director – is a highly in-demand music director, accompanist, arranger, and coach in New York and throughout the country. He was the music director for the Grammy Award winning and 10-time Tony Award winning The Band’s Visit on Broadway, as well as various musical positions for Lysistrata Jones and The Book Of Mormon. No stranger to upstate NY, Jeff has been a long-time music director for The REV Theatre Company (formerly Merry-Go-Round Playhouse/FLMTF) and graduated with his master’s in music from Ithaca College where he is currently on faculty as an assistant professor in the theater department. Jeff is excited to finally join the Hangar team for this concert and, hopefully, many more productions to come (hint, hint!).
