January 10 @ 4:00 pm
Artist in Residency Series
Hangar AIRS events are designed to bring artists into Ithaca and give our network a chance to engage with them in intimate settings.
Liz Baker writes stories for the stage and screen. Currently completing an MFA in Dramatic Writing under the guidance of Rob Handel, she also holds a BA in Film Studies from Mount Holyoke College. She forged her theatre-making skills with Kitchen Theatre Company, Hangar Theatre/Center for the Arts in Ithaca, and MHC’s Project: Theatre. Most recently, her screenplay “Dark Matters” was a semi-finalist in the Alfred P. Sloan’s 2017-18 Screenwriting Competition. Her play “The Death of Odysseus” saw production at the Rattlestick Playwrights’ Theater as part of the Theater Masters Take Ten Festival in spring 2018 and has since been published by Samuel French in the anthology, Theater Masters’ Take Ten, Volume 4 (due for release in 2019). Project Description:
Something Massive Looms Overhead attempts to explore what humanity’s vision of itself has been and may be –– contrasting the current atmosphere of widespread anxiety-depression in the 2010’s with the optimism of generations past –– as seen through the lens of the Golden Voyager Records Project of the late 1970’s. In this equal parts hopeful and despairing full-length play, characters Dylan, Marco, and Travis attempt to re-produce a more ambitious version of Carl Sagan’s project in the present day, a process that ultimately forces them to articulate their own ideas about the future and confront their individual spiritual anxieties. This will be a discussion that gives insight to this play, not a reading.
Following this discussion, the Hangar Theatre Company will be announcing our
Big Play Festival! titles, including the Subscriber’s Choice voting options.
